Climate strategy
Mammut's climate strategy motto is "Do our best, remove the rest." Its approach focuses on tangible, progressive climate action and measurable carbon removal solutions, whether that be nature-based, technological, or hybrid approaches. Having signed the Paris Agreement's UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, Mammut is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 and aims to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to its 2018 baseline. To achieve this goal, the company has set science-based targets and identified measures to significantly decarbonize its value chain. Mammut's strategy is based on the latest Science Based Targets initiative (SBTI) Corporate Net-Zero Standard and other standards/frameworks.
Challenge
Mammut's first challenge is outlined in the "Do our best" part of its motto, which requires a 90% reduction in emissions by 2050, with a near-term reduction target of more than 50% by 2030. To achieve this, the company plans to switch to renewable energy, switch from fossil-based to less carbon-intensive materials and technologies and explore circular business models. Crucially, Mammut also hopes to engage consumers to take action, while supporting stronger regulations to accelerate policy change. That's where the second challenge, "Remove the rest", comes in. When building a CDR portfolio, the team wanted to engage in CDR that offered third-party verification, proven expertise, high-quality, and scalability to prepare for the future through early investment. Additionally, it was essential for them to find a way to inspire the industry and engage customers to take action at the same time.
"At Mammut, our climate strategy is primarily focused on reducing our CO₂ emissions along our value chain to "Do our best". Therefore, we are committed to supporting the energy transition together with our suppliers, using more sustainable materials and technologies, and implementing circular business models. To "remove the rest" teaming up with partners like Climeworks is an important part of our overall climate strategy and supports us in removing the unavoidable emissions."

Solution
In 2022, Mammut became the first company in the outdoor industry to partner with Climeworks. They initiated a multi-year contract with Climeworks for CDR services via DAC+S, alongside their decarbonization measures.
Mammut's entire trail running collection is 100% decarbonized, meaning its production emissions will not simply be compensated for, but physically removed from the atmosphere.
As a pioneer in carbon removal, Mammut took its leadership further via the net-zero Strava x Climeworks running challenge to inspire consumers to become part of a global climate movement. The goal: jointly run 10M km for Climeworks to remove 10 tons of CO₂. Nearly 278k participants ran almost 30M km, which was 18k more participants than estimated and nearly 3 times the 10M km goal.
Key success factors
Climate leadership at the core
Beyond its own climate targets, by broadly sharing its CDR commitment, Mammut was determined to educate and show the way to industry and consumers, and inspire them to follow.
Product innovation as a platform
The best way to broadly communicate Mammut's CDR commitment with Climeworks was to integrate it into a fully decarbonized Trail Running Collection.
Pioneering trusted, high-quality solutions
Mammut was confident that only high-quality solutions can have a real climate impact at scale. Climeworks CDR fits the bill thanks to its trusted qualities of permanence, measurability, additionality, and third-party verification.
