Carbon Dioxide Removal in the SBTi Net-Zero Standard v2.0

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has just released a game-changing update—the draft Corporate Net Zero Standard V2.0—introducing critical new guidance on near-term carbon removal targets. This update reshapes corporate climate strategies, making net-zero more achievable while aligning with evolving regulations.

Caroline Ott and Molly Tinker, our Carbon Markets experts, explained during a webinar on 24 April 2025 what this means for your company, how it fits within broader policy trends, and how you can stay ahead in the carbon removal market.

Watch the recording below to learn:

  • What are interim removal targets and why are they being introduced?

  • How do interim removal targets support my net-zero strategy?

  • Which types of carbon removal credits can be used to meet interim removal targets?

  • How can I build a carbon removal portfolio that's SBTi aligned?

Key take-aways

  • The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has introduced updated guidelines, including interim removal targets, in its revised Net-Zero Standard draft.

  • Based on interim removal targets, companies should start purchasing carbon removal credits before 2030, rather than waiting for their net-zero year.

  • These targets mainly apply to Scope 1 residual emissions, with potential future guidance for Scope 3 in high-emission sectors like aviation.

  • Two ramp-up scenarios are proposed: one based on greenhouse gas type, and another based on global deployment projections. With different volumes of short-term (e.g., afforestation, biochar) and long-term (e.g., direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering) removals in each.

  • Carbon removal credits leveraged towards targets could count toward SBTi and compliance obligations (e.g., CORSIA).

  • Companies are urged to begin planning and contracting now to ensure access to removals by 2030 and avoid future supply shortages.
